the original detail remains; this reduces the
amount of luminance noise reduction but
keeps the image looking more natural.
■ Contrast. This slider controls how much of
the luminance contrast is allowed to remain.
The higher the value, the more contrast
remains, and the noisier but more natural the
image looks.
■ Color. This setting controls the color noise
present in the image. The more the slider is
moved to the right, the more the color noise
is reduced.
■ Detail. This setting controls how much detail
is allowed to remain in the image. The higher
the detail level, the more the thin edges are

The second section has the Noise Reduction con-
trols. There are two different kinds of noise: lumi-
nance noise and color noise. The controls for
reducing noise in Lightroom deal with these types
separately. The controls are broken down by the
type of noise they help reduce; the first three
affect the luminance noise while the fourth and
fifth affect the color noise.


■ Luminance. This slider reduces the luminance
noise. You must be careful not to reduce it too
much or all the detail will be lost and the
image will look very processed and not natural.


■   Detail. Adjusting the Detail slider controls

what the Luminance slider above it works on.
The more the detail effect is applied, the more
