CHAPTER
NIGHT AND LOW-LIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY / All About Light and Exposure

Many cameras allow you to set this auto bracket-
ing function in the aperture priority and shutter
priority modes. This enables you to specify which
of the exposure settings will be adjusted. When
you use aperture priority as the exposure mode
and set the bracketing function, the camera first
meters the scene using the built-in light meter,
then picks the shutter speed it has determined
will produce the proper exposure, and then calcu-
lates which shutter speeds will produce the
desired under- and overexposed images. This

One of the reasons why bracketing works well is
that many cameras have the feature built right
in so it can be set up easily. The function is usu-
ally called automatic exposure bracketing and
can be set in the camera to take a series of brack-
eted images automatically. Check the manual
for information on how to set this feature for
your specific camera. If you want a wide variety
between the exposures, set the difference between
the exposures at 2 stops, but if you want to keep
the changes small, set the difference to 1/3 stop.
