Assignment

Capture the same scene using equivalent exposures

For this assignment, choose a scene and photograph it twice using equivalent exposures. Share
your results with other readers on the website. When you photograph the same scene using dif-
ferent shutter speeds, apertures, and ISOs, you can really get a feel for what each does. The
same scene photographed with a long shutter speed and a short shutter speed look very differ-
ent even though exposure is the same. These two photographs were taken at the same place at
the same time with the same overall proper exposure, but they look different due to the changes
in the shutter speed, aperture, and ISO settings between them.

By using a short shutter speed of 1/60 second in the left image, the cars that are driving down the
road are frozen in place and you can distinctly see each one. The photo on the right was taken with
a shutter speed of 1 second and the cars became streaks of light. To keep the exposure the same, I
also had to change the ISO and aperture. The image on the left was taken at 1/60 second, f/2.8, and
ISO 1600 while the image on the right was taken at 1 second, f/5.6, and ISO 100.
