Signed and dated “H.R. BUTLER 82” l.l.,
inscribed “Have mounted to day so artist can
touch up...” in pencil on the reverse, inscribed
and titled “Uncle Howard-1882/‘Gathering
Seaweed’ (Flanders? Brittany?)/Think Cress
had it. I found it up/in our attic in 1979-must
have/been there for years. Had it re-framed./
M.H.S.” in pencil on the paper backing.
Watercolor and graphite on paper, sheet
size 12 7/8 x 16 3/8 in. (32.7 x 41.6 cm),
framed.
Condition: Mat burn, old paper backing and
glue residue to the reverse, cloth tape hinged
to window mat, trimmed sheet with partial
crop marks to edges.Provenance: By descent from the artist
through the artist’s family, to the current owner.
