in gallery” in pencil on the reverse and “One of

Uncle Howard’s many/Maine coast paintings-/

perhaps painted in the/late 20s. Aunt Virginia/

gave it to me for a/wedding present, 1941/I

love it/M.H.” in pencil on the paper backing.

Oil on canvasboard, 16 x 20 in. (40.6 x 50.8

cm), framed (under glass).

Condition: Retouch to l.r. quadrant, minor gilt

along edges beneath frame liner.

Provenance: By descent from the artist

through the artist’s family, to the current owner.

Oil on canvas, 20 x 27 in. (50.8 x 68.6 cm),

stretched with Boston tabs, in a frame liner.

Condition: Minor abrasion l.l. and beneath

frame liner, minor craquelure, surface grime,

subtle varnish inconsistencies.
