1850 and 1939 were further played out in the years between 1940 and the
present day. The conclusion offers a reflection on the ever-growing com-
plexity of the relationship between the private and the public spheres
in the contemporary context which could facilitate, among other strange
phenomena, the bewildering presence of a living room in a shopping
mall. However, with ‘virtual’ space becoming as influential in our daily
lives as ‘physical’ space, the conclusion suggests, the concept of industrial
modernity may have been stretched to its limits and the time may have
come for us to think again about the meaning of ‘the modern interior’.
