status of a luxurious work of art. Hoffmann achieved that goal through
a repetition of the delineation of the joints between the planes of the
building and of its contents, and through a unified approach towards the
manipulation of the proportions, the lighting, the colours, the materials,
the decorative details of the internal structural elements, and the furni-
