The trouble for Caroline Sacks began in
the spring of her freshman year, when
she enrolled in chemistry. She was
probably taking too many courses, she
realizes now, and doing too many
extracurricular activities. She got her
grade on her third midterm exam, and
her heart sank. She went to talk to the
professor. “He ran me through some
exercises, and he said, ‘Well, you have a
fundamental deficiency in some of these
concepts, so what I would actually
recommend is that you drop the class,
not bother with the final exam, and take
the course again next fall.’” So she did
