Manypeopledonotrealizethatwhattheyconsumehasastrongeffectontheir
psyche.Thisimpliesnotonlyphysicalfoods,butalsoallmannerofconsumption
sincehumanbeingsconsumethroughthemouth,theears,theeyes,touch,thoughts
anddesires,etc.Thesefoodscanhaveaneffectonthemind,becausethemindand
sensesareintouchwiththephysicalbodythroughthebrainandnervoussystem.
Thiseffectregisters,andinturncausesimpressions,asortofdeepmemoryinthe
unconsciousmind.Theseimpressionsinturncausenewthoughts,relatedtotheim-
pression,toemerge.Iftheimpressionsareforeatingproperly,thenacycleofvirtue
hasbeenestablishedinthediet.Thesethoughtsareproperduetothepositiveim-
pressionsfromwhichtheystemandofwhichtheywillcreatemore.Iftheimpres-
sionsareforincorrecteating,thenacycleofvicehasbeenestablishedinthediet.
Therefore,theissueofthenatureandmannerofthefoodsconsumedcanhaveapro-
foundeffectontheariorkarmicbasisoftheindividual.(SeethesectionTheRole

Therearethreemajorstatesofconsciousnessonwhichallotherstatesarebased.Thesearethehar-
moniousstate,characterizedbybalanceandequanimity,theagitatedstate,characterizedbymove-
ment,distraction,andagitation,andthedullstate,characterizedbylistlessness,heaviness,obtuse-
ness,slownessandweakness.Justastherearethreemajorstatesofrelativeconsciousness,thereare
threebasickindsoffoods.Thesetwocategoriesareinterrelated,withagitatingfoodpromotingan
agitatedmind,dullfoodsadullmindandlucidfoodsalucidmind.Thefirstgroupiscomposedof
those foods which engender restlessness and distraction.
Ex. sugars, salty 82 foods, onions, 83 dry foods, hot spices, coffee, fish, poultry, eggs, etc.
Agitatingfoodspromotepassion,stimulatetheemotionsandexcitethebody.Foodsthataretoo
spicy,hotorsour,areconsideredtobeagitatingtothesystem.Alsoeatinginahurrypromotesrest-
lessness and distraction.
DullFoodsarethesecondgroup.Thisgroupiscomposedoffoodswhichpromotedullness.This
group includes:
Ex. meats, tobacco, alcohol, fermented foods, processed foods, stale or overripe foods.
Overeating,even the good foods, promotes dullness.
