Authenticspiritualityservestwopurposesinhealing.Firstitgivesthepersonhopethatthere
issomethinggreaterthanthesufferingandthathealingispossible.Thenitgivestheperson
spiritualstrengthtomakethenecessarychangesinordertopromotethehealingprocess.
Withoutthewilltochangetheirlifestyle,Christiansandotherswillhaveadifficulttimedis-
coveringtruehealth.Thelackofdirectionandstabilitythroughthepracticeofaneffective
religionpreventsthecapacityofthemindtodiscovertrueharmonyandpeace.Underthese
conditions health will be elusive and at best temporary.
Soreligioncannotbefollowedinnameonly,orinritualonly(prayer,chanting,singing,
praisingGod,etc.).Itmustbeanintegralaspectofalifethatiscommittedtotheprinciples
ofuniversalreligion(nonviolence,vegetarianism,mysticism,meditationandenlighten-
ment).Otherwise,ifthespiritualoutlookoflifeislimitedtoritualorexotericandsecular
practices(Church,TempleorMosquegoing)insteadofmysticismandspiritualtranscend-
ence(discoveringtheDivineandbecomingonewiththeDivine),thespiritualmovement
willalwaysfallshortandfrustratetheindividual,andinevitablyleadtodisease.Keepin
mindherethatreligiosityisnotnecessarilyauthenticspirituality.AdolfHitlerwasamember
oftheCatholicchurch,andyetlookattheatrocitieshecommittedagainsthumanity.The
samecanbesaidfortheleadersofcountriessuchasSouthAfricaandtheUnitedStateswho
allowedlynchingandthemurderofmillionsofAfricansandNativeAmericans.Cantheybe
consideredasauthenticandsincerepractitionersofreligion?WhiletheeffortsofDr.Malk-
musarecommendableandshouldbesupported,shouldotherfundamentalquestionsalso
askedaboutthereligioustraditions,practicesandbeliefsthathaveledpeopletopracticere-
ligioninnameonly?Cananyonewhodoesnotfollowtheprinciplesoftheirownreligion,so
thattheycanseektosatisfytheiregoisticdesires,beconsideredasreligiousorspiritual?
Andcantherebeanywonderastothecausesoftheirphysical,mentalandspiritualailments
in the presence of the cultural and theological deficiencies outlined above?
