The“normal”stateofhumanconsciousnesscannotbeconsideredas“whole”orcompletebecauseif
itwastherewouldbenoexperienceoflapsesorgapsinconsciousness.Inotherwords,everyinstant
ofconsciousnesswouldbeaccountedfor.Therewouldbenotrance-likestateswhereinoneloses
trackoftimeorawarenessofone’sownactivities,evenastheyarebeingperformed.Inthetimesof
tranceorlapse,fullawarenessorconsciousnessisnotpresent,otherwiseitwouldbeimpossibleto
notbeawareofthepassageoftimewhileengagedinvariousactivities.Trancehereshouldbediffer-
entiatedfromthereligiousormysticalformoftrancelikestatesinducedthroughmeditation.Asused
above,itreferstotheconditionofbeingsolostinsolitarythoughtastobeunawareofone’ssur-
roundings.Itmayfurtherbecharacterizedasastunnedorbewilderedcondition,afog,stupor,be-
fuddlement,daze,muddledstateofmind.Mosteveryonehasexperiencedthisconditionatsome
pointoranother.Whatmostpeopleconsidertobethe“awake”stateofmindinwhichlifeislivedis
in reality only a fraction of the total potential consciousness, which a human being can experience.
Mentaldistraction,restlessnessandextroversioncharacterizethestateofautomaticconsciousness.
Theautomaticstateofmindexistsduetoemotionssuchasdesire,angerandhatredwhichengender
desiresinthemind,whichinturncausemoremovement,distractions,delusionsandlapsesor“gaps”
inhumanconsciousness.Inthiscondition,itdoesnotmatterhowmanydesiresarefulfilled.The
mindwillalwaysbedistractedandagitatedandwillneverdiscoverpeaceandcontentment.Ifthe
mindwereundercontrol,meaning,ifyouweretoremainfullyawareandconsciousofeveryfeeling,
thoughtandemotioninyourmindatanygiventime,itwouldbeimpossibleforyoutobeswayedor
deludedbyyourthoughtsintoastateofrelativeunconsciousnessorun-awareness.Therefore,itis
saidthatthosewhodonothavetheirmindsundercontrolarenotfullyawakeandconscioushuman
beings.
Meditationandmysticalphilosophyaredisciplines,whicharedirectedtowardincreasingawareness.
Awarenessorconsciousnesscanonlybeincreasedwhenthemindisinastateofpeaceandharmony.
Thus,thedisciplinesofMeditation(whicharepartofthemysticalspirituality)aretheprimarymeans
of controlling the mind and allowing the individual to mature psychologically and spiritually.
Psychologicalgrowthispromotedbecausewhenthemindisbroughtundercontrol,theintellectbe-
comesclearandpsychologicalcomplexessuchasanxietyandotherdelusions,whichhaveaneffect
eveninordinarypeople,canbeclearedup.Controlofthemindandthepromotionofinternalhar-
monyallowthemeditatortointegratetheirpersonalityandtoresolvethehiddenissuesofthepresent,
of childhood and of past lives.
Whenthemindhasbeenbroughtundercontrol,theexpansioninconsciousnessleadstothediscovery
thatone’sownindividualconsciousnessisnotthetotalexperienceofconsciousness.Throughthe
correctpracticeofmeditation,theindividual’sconsciousness-awarenessexpandstothepointwherein
thereisadiscoverythatoneismorethanjustanindividual.Thestateof“automaticconsciousness”
becomesreducedinfavoroftheexperiencesofincreasinglevelsofcontinuousawareness.Inother
words,thereisadecreaseindaydreamingaswellastheepisodesofcarryingoutactivitiesandforget-
tingoneselfinthemuntiltheyarefinished(drivingforexample).Also,thereisareducedlevelofloss
ofawarenessofselfduringthedreaming-sleepanddreamless-sleepstates.Normally,mostpeopleat
