atthetimewhenone“falls”asleeporwhenthereisnoawarenessofdreamswhileinthedeepsleep
state(dreamless-sleep).Thisswooningeffectcausesanordinarypersontoloseconsciousnessoftheir
own“wakingstate”identityandtoassumetheidentityoftheir“dreamsubject”andthus,tofeelthat
the dream subject as well as the dream world are realities in themselves.
Thisshiftinidentificationfromthewakingpersonalitytothedreampersonalitytotheabsenceof
eitherpersonalityinthedreamless-sleepstateledancientphilosopherstodiscoverthatthesestatesare
notabsoluterealities.Philosophically,anythingthatisnotcontinuousandabidingcannotbecon-
sideredasreal.Onlywhatexistsanddoesnotchangeinallperiodsoftimecanbeconsideredas
“real.”Nothingintheworldofhumanexperiencequalifiesasrealaccordingtothistest.Nature,the
humanbody,everythinghasabeginningandanend.Therefore,theyarenotabsolutelyreal.Theyap-
peartoberealbecauseofthelimitedmindandsensesalongwiththebeliefinthemindthattheyare
real.Inotherwords,peoplebelievethatmatterandphysicalobjectsarerealeventhoughmodern
physicshasproventhatallmatterisnot“physical”or“stable.”Itchangesconstantlyanditsconstitu-
entpartsareinrealitycomposedof“emptyspaces.”Thinkaboutit.Whenyoufallasleep,you“be-
lieve”thatthedreamworldis“real”butuponwakingupyoubelieveitwasnotreal.Atthesame
time,whenyoufallasleep,youforgetthewakingworld,yourrelativesandlifehistory,andassume
anentirelynewhistory,relatives,situationsandworldsystems.Therefore,philosophically,theordin-
arystatesofconsciousness,whichahumanbeingexperiences,arelimitedandillusory.Thewaking,
dreamanddreamless-sleepstatesareonlytransientexpressionsofthedeeperunderlyingconscious-
ness.ThisunderlyingconsciousnesswhichwitnessestheotherthreestatesiswhatCarlJungreferred
toasthe“CollectiveUnconscious.”InIndianPhilosophythis“fourth”stateofconsciousness-aware-
nessisknownasTuria.Itisalsoreferredtoas“GodConsciousness”or“CosmicConsciousness.”
ThecorrespondingtermsinKemeticphilosophyare,Nhast,spiritualresurrectionorMaak-heru–spir-
itual victory.
Thetheoryofmeditationisthatwhenthemindandsensesarecontrolledandtranscended,theaware-
nessofthetranscendentalstateofconsciousnessbecomesevident.Fromhere,consciousness-aware-
nessexpands,allowingthemeditatortodiscoverthelatentabilitiesoftheunconsciousmind.When
thisoccurs,animmensefeelingofjoyemergesfromwithin,thedesireforhappinessandfulfillment
throughexternalobjectsandsituationsdwindlesandapeaceful,transcendentalstateofminddevel-
ops.Also,theinnerresourcesarediscoveredwhichwillallowthepractitionertomeetthechallenges
of life (disappointments, disease, death, etc.) while maintaining a poised state of mind.
Whentheheightsofmeditativeexperiencearereached,thereisamorecontinuousformofaware-
ness,whichdevelops.Itisnotlostatthetimeoffallingasleep.Atthisstagethereisadiscoverythat
justasthedreamstateisdiscoveredtobe“unreal”upon“wakingup”inthemorning,thewaking
stateisalsodiscoveredtobeakindofdreamwhichistranscendedatthetimeof“fallingasleep.”
Thereisaformof“continuousawareness”whichdevelopsinthemind,whichspansallthreestates
of consciousness, and becomes a “witness” to them instead of a subject bound by them.
