Estrogen Replacement Therapy and Hormone Replacement Therapy
Bothformenandwomen,theproperfunctioningoftheendocrinesystemisanes-
sentialpartofproperhealth.TheEndocrineSystemiscomposedofalltheendo-
crine,orductless,glandsinthebody.Thesesecretechemicalsubstancesknownas
hormonesdirectlyintothebloodstream,andtheseacttocontrolbodyfunctions.It
hasbeenreferredtoasa“liquidnervoussystem.” 194 Themostimportantendocrine
glandsare(1)Thepituitarygland,(2)Thethyroidgland,(3)Theparathyroid
glands,(4)Theadrenalglands,(5)TheislandsofLangerhansinthepancreas,and
(6)Thesexglands,orgonads--inmales,thetestes,whichsecretetestosterone;infe-
males, the ovaries, which secrete estrogensand progesterones.
Menopauseisaconditionthatmostwomenexperiencebetweentheagesof 45 and
55.Itisprecipitatedwhenthefemalereproductivecapacitycomestoanend.Atthis
timemanyphysiologicalandinsomewomen,psychologicalchangesoccur,someof
which“havestillnotbeencompletelyelucidated.” 195 ManyWesternwomencom-
plainofchangesthatincludeHotFlashes,Osteoporosis,Depression,Genitaland
Breastatrophy.Also,manywomenreportanincreaseinsexdesire(associatedwith
thereliefofstressduetofearofconception),butalsothisisaccompaniedbyaper-
ceptionoflossofdesirabilityandattractiveness.Themedicalestablishmenthasas-
sociated these problems, with a loss in estrogen production.
ESTROGENAny of several steroid hormones produced chiefly by the
ovaries and responsible for promoting estrus and the development and
maintenance of female secondary sex characteristics. 196
TheWesternmedicalestablishmenthasdevisedatreatmentcalledEstrogenRe-
placementTherapyandHormoneReplacementTherapy.Theuseofsynthetic(pro-
ducedinlaboratories)hormoneshasyieldedsomepositiveresults.However,the
syntheticchemicalhormonesarenotaseasilydigestibleastheonesproducednatur-
allybythebody.Othernaturalhormonesderivedfromhorses,havebeenused,also
withlimitedsuccess.Theseposeadangerespeciallytowomenwhoareobese,or
whosmokeorsufferfromhighbloodpressure.Thusitisclearthathormonesfrom
