Safety of Vitamins and Minerals


Thebodycanabsorbaround 10 to15%ofthenutrientsinanordinaryvitaminpill.


Sotherestisexcreted,primarilyinurine,andflusheddownthetoilet.Sothismeans


thatforevery$10.00spentonsupplements,onemightbeflushing$8.50downthe


toilet.Therefore,themoneywouldbebetterspentonfoodsincethehumanbody


worksbettertakinginafooditem,breakingitdownandtakingthenutrientsitneeds


fromit.However,duetotheproblemswiththedepletionofthenutrientsinthe


food,poorfoodchoices,cookedfoods,stressfullifestyleswhichfurtherdepletethe

lowances(USRDA)areguidelinesonly.TheRDAfiguresaresuggestedbythe


FoodandNutritionBoard,acommitteeoftheNationalAcademyofSciences-Na-


tionalResearchCouncil,whichmeetseveryfiveyearsorso,toreviewandreviseits


recommendations.Astheboarddefinesthem,theRDAsare“thelevelsofintakeof


essentialnutrientsconsidered,inthejudgmentoftheFoodandNutritionBoard,on


thebasisofavailablescientificknowledge,tobeadequatetomeettheknownnutri-


tional needs of practically all healthy persons.”


TheUSRDAarebasedonstandardstomaintainmarginalpreventionofvitamindeficiency,themin-
imumlevelneededtomaintainbasichealth.However,thesefiguresdonotrelatetooptimalhealth
maintenance.Despitethecautionssoundedbytheagencyanddrugmanufacturers,studieshave
shownthatitisnotharmfultoconsumetwotothreetimestherecommendedlevelsofvitamins(in-
cludingvitaminA 221 andvitaminD 222 ).Manypeopleregularlydoconsumetwotothreetimesthe
RDAofsomeofthevitaminsthroughthefoodstheyeat,especiallyiftheytakeamultivitaminsup-
plementalongwiththeirregularfoodintake. 223 Therefore,thereisnobasisforacceptingthe
USRDAasastandardforoptimalhealth.Thus,somewholisticnutritionistsandmedicaldoctorshave
takentodevelopingguidelinesforOptimalDailyAllowances(ODA).Therecommendedvitamin
