thattrueabidinghappiness,thatisunwaveringandunaffectedbyanyoutercircum-
stancesandconditions,canonlybeexperiencedwhenthemindremainscalm,
peaceful,andlovingonacontinualbasis,evenasoneparticipatesintheworldasa
seemingly“normal”person.Whenthemostpeoplehearandconsiderthisteaching,
especiallywithrespecttotheirownpersonalexperiencesinlife,theyoftenfeela
senseofdisbelief,andusuallyconcludethatthisissimplynotpossible.Theyoften
citecircumstanceswheretheyfeltthesituationwassooverwhelming,thateventhe
mostEnlightenedsaintwouldhavebecomeaffectediftheyweretheonewhohadto
beinvolvedindealingwiththatsituation.However,thisiswhytheteachingsalso
giveinjunctionstotheneophyte(beginner)spiritualstudentthattheymusthave
threefoldfaithiftheywishtoprogressintheprocessofgainingsupremecontrol
overthemind,andbecomeEnlightenedbeings.Theymusthavefaithinthespiritual
preceptor’sabilitytoleadthemalongthepathoftruth,intheirownabilitytoaccept
thetruth,andintheirabilitytoactwithwisdom.Inotherwords,onceyouhave
found an authentic teacher and teaching, you must trust the process.
StoriesofBuddhatellthathewouldnotallownewstudentstoaskquestionsforthe
firstyearoftheirstayathisspiritualcenter.He,liketheKemeticsages,knewthat
studentsfirstneededtodeveloparelationshipwiththeteacherandteachingsinthe
environmentofthespiritualcenter,todeveloptrustandfaithinboth.Healsoknew
thatthedepthoftheteachingsthatwerebeinggivenwouldbebeyondtheirgrasp,
duetotheirlackoffamiliaritywith,andinsightintothem.Thus,thequestionsthey
wouldaskwouldexpressdisagreementwiththeteachings,ratherthanunderstand-
ing.Heknewthatintheenvironmentofthespiritualcenter,theywould,alongwith
theolderstudents,practicethemysticaldisciplinesofpurification,suchasvegetari-
andiet,selflessservice,meditation,compassion,forgiveness,etc.,inanintegral
fashion.This,heknew,wouldallowtheseedofaspirationintheirhearts,thathad
gottenthemtothispointofstrivingtoseeksomethingmorethanthesocalled“nor-
mal”valuesofworldlylife,tosprout,grow,andeventuallybloomintointuition.
Practicingthedisciplinesofmysticalphilosophyalongwithlisteningtotheteach-
ingswouldallowtheirquestionstobeansweredinamannerthatwouldbeeffective
forthem,thatwouldleadthemtounderstandingratherthanargument.Intime,they
wouldfindthattheirquestionswouldbeanswereddirectlybytheteachingsasthey
