Manypeopleturntofishwhentheyaretryingtoweanthemselvesoffofmeatandpoultry.Themedia
andconventionalmedicalestablishmenthasledthemajorityofpeopletobelievethatfishisactually
ahealthyfood,somethingwhichisgoodforthem,andeventheAmericanHeartAssociationallows
fortheconsumptionoffishforpeoplewithheartdisease,havinglessfatandcholesterolthanother
typesofmeatssuchasbeef,pork,poultry,etc.Theperpetuationoftheideathatfishisgoodfor
peopletoeatespeciallygainedmomentumwhenitwasrevealedinthemassmediathatEskimoshave
lowerlevelsofheartattacks,eventhoughtheirdietsarerichinfat.Furtherresearchindicatedthat
thisbeneficialeffectstheEskimosexperiencedwasduetothehighlevelsofomega-3fattyacidsin
fish,andthus,fishandfishoilswere“established”inthemindsofthepublicashearthealthyfoods.
WhatwasnotrevealedorelaborateduponinthesamereportsabouttheEskimoshowever,wasthat
fish,andfishoils,beinganimalproducts,containsaturatedfatsandwillincreaseone’scholesterol.
Highcholesterolisoneofthecontributingfactorstoheartdisease.Fishoil,beingderivedfromfish,
issubjecttothesameproblemsthatmakeeatingfishundesirable.Thesewillbediscussedinthissec-

ActualstudiesontheeffectofeatingfishandHeartDiseaseDisease”indicatethateatingfishisof


nobenefitinpreventingheartattacksordecreasingtheincidenceofheartdisease.CardiologistDean
Ornish,M.D.,citesaTheLancetstudyinhisbookDr.DeanOrnish’sProgramforReversingHeart
Diseaseonmenwhoatefishthreetimesperweekfollowingtheirheartattack.Thestudyfoundthat
“therewasnodecreaseintheincidenceofheartattacks.”JaneBroodyinherbook,TheNewYork
TimesBookofHealthreportsonastudybyDr.AlbertoAscheriooftheHarvardSchoolofPublic
Healthandhiscolleagueswhichfollowed44,895menforaperiodof 6 years.Thepurposeofthe
studywastofindoutifthosewhoatethemostfishwouldhavethelowestincidenceofheartdisease.
Thefindingsofthisstudyshowedthattherateofheartdiseasewasnotaffected,regardlessofifthe
subjects ate fish once a month or six times a week.
Asmentionedabove,somepeopleeatfishandyetrefertothemselvesasvegetarians.Thisisnoncor-
rect,sincevegetarianismreferstothosewhodonoteatanyanimalflesh,andfishisanimalflesh.
Thus,fish,likeallotheranimals,isnotbiologically,physiologicallyoranatomicallythecorrectfood
forthehumanbody.Inaddition,itspoilsfasterthanothermeatssuchasbeeforpoultry,becoming
putrefiedfasterthantheothermeatsandcreatingtoxinsinthebodywhenitiseaten.Anothermajor
concernwitheatingfishandseafoodrelatestopollutionofthewatersworldwidewithtoxinssuchas
mercury,PCB’s,dioxin,etc.,whichhavebeenlinkedtocancer,sterility,birthdefects,etc.Dr.Cou-
sens,M.D.,inthebookConsciousEating,citesaWashington.Postarticlewhichattributeddecreased
spermcountsandincreasedsterilityinAmericanmalesprimarilytoPCBs.Dr.Cousensfurtherre-
portsthatanotherU.S.governmentstudyfoundthat100%ofthespermsamplesfromthementested
containedPCBs,andthatmosttoxicologyexpertsattributehumanPCBcontaminationtothecon-
sumptionoffish.HegoesontosaythattheEnvironmentalProtectionAgencyestimatesthat“fish
