despite competitors offering similar laptops for
considerably less.
Apple had hoped that the 12-inch MacBook
would serve in lieu of the MacBook Air, and
perhaps its long-term ambition was to remove
the Air branding entirely and run with the
MacBook and MacBook Pro, like the iMac and
iMac Pro. But when MacBook sales struggled
to rival the Air’s, the company developed a
new MacBook Air and decided the end was
neigh for the 12-inch MacBook. The MacBook
line previously ran from 2006 to 2012, so it’s
certainly not impossible for the brand to return
in the future, especially if Apple does develop
an ARM-based Mac to move away from Intel.
Only time will tell whether that will happen
and if the MacBook will live to see another
reincarnation. We’re secretly hoping it’ll make a
grand return in the early 2020s.
MACBOOK AIR:
THE NEW CHOICE FOR STUDENTS
It wasn’t all bad news for students, who had
previously flocked to the MacBook. Apple last
week lifted the lid on an updated MacBook
Air with True Tone adaptive screen technology
and a lower price point, down from $1199 to
$1099, and just $999 for students. Despite
being overhauled just nine months prior
in November 2018, Apple added True Tone
technology to the model for the first time to
coincide with back-to-school season, making it
an unbeatable choice for students, particularly
when paired with Apple’s Back to School
promotion, which offers a free pair of Beats
Studio 3 headphones with the purchase of
a qualifying Mac.
