Alita: Battle Angel
In the year 2563, a deactivated female
cyborg, Alita (Rosa Salazar), wakes up unable
to recall her past or recognize the Earth on
which she now lives, three centuries after it
was devastated by war. Scientist Dr. Dyson
Ido (Christoph Waltz), however, recognizes
her world-saving potential, while new friend
Hugo (Keean Johnson) aims to help her to
remember her past.
FIVE FACTS:
- This cyberpunk sci-fi film is based on
Yukito Kishiro’s 1990s Japanese manga series
Gunnm, the English-language version of
which is known as Battle Angel Alita. - Legendary filmmaker James Cameron has
co-produced and co-written this film, which
was originally announced back in 2003
when Cameron was named as its director. - The domain name “battleangelalita.com”
was actually registered to Cameron around
June 2000. - The film’s production was repeatedly
delayed as Cameron focused on other
projects, including Avatar, but Robert
Rodriguez was finally announced as Alita:
Battle Angel’s director in April 2016. - Critics have taken issue with the film’s
screenplay, but the action scenes and
visual effects have been praised, as has
Salazar’s performance.
