(Barré) #1
HERBAL MONOGRAPHS

ilis, mumps, conjunctivitis, scabies, ring worm infestation,
ulcers, constipation and as an emetic.
Homeopathic Uses: Uses in homeopathic medicine include
inflammation of the mucous membranes (particularly of the
m respiratory tract), feverish infections, inflammation of condi-
tions of the mammary glands and rheumatic conditions.
PRECAUTIONS AND ADVERSE REACTIONS
General: All parts of the plants are poisonous, due to the
presence of mucous membrane-irritating saponins and of the
toxic, perorally effective lectins. The toxicity is reduced
through cooking, since this destroys the lectins.
Pediatric Use: Emergency poison treatment procedures
should be instituted in small children who consume even one
berry.
OVERDOSAGE
Symptoms of poisoning include diarrhea (sometimes
bloody), dizziness, hypotension, severe thirst, somnolence,
tachycardia, vomiting, and in severe cases, spasm and death
through respiratory failure. Up to 10 berries are considered
harmless for an adult, but could be dangerous for a small
child. Adults who consume more than 10 berries and small
children who consume any berries should be treated for
£ poisoning. This includes stomach and intestinal emptying
(inducement of vomiting, gastric lavage with burgundy-
colored potassium permanganate solution, sodium sulphate)
and instillation of activated charcoal. Electrolyte substitution
and the use of sodium bicarbonate to treat possible acidosis
may be necessary.

DOSAGE
Mode of Administration: Administered as a powder, liquid
extract and tincture.
Daily Dosage: Usual dosage is 60 to 100 mg
Homeopathic Dosage: 5 drops, 1 tablet or 10 globules every
30 to 60 minutes (acute) or 1 to 3 times daily (chronic);
parenterally: 1 to 2 ml SC, IV., IM, acute: 3 times daily;
chronic: once a day (HAB1).
Storage: The drug should be stored in paper or sacks made
from cloth.

DESCRIPTION
Medicinal Parts: The medicinal part is the whole herb.
Flower and Fruit: The flowers are axillary forming a
capitula. They are fused and sessile, and their structures are
in "fives. The calyx is turned slightly upward with 5
acuminate tips and is white-gray pubescent. The corolla is
reddish-white or yellowish. The upper lip is deeply divided
into two and fused to half of the lower lip so that it appears
5-tipped. There are 4 stamens, which are much longer than
the corolla, and a 2-carpeled ovary, divided, but not to the
base. The fruit is a nutlet.
