A Brief Introduction to Biostatistics

(C. Jardin) #1

Steps for test of significance

  • A test of significance can only be done on a
    difference, e.g. difference betw and , 1 and 2

  1. Decide the difference to be tested, e.g. difference
in pulse rate betw those who were subjected to a
stress test and the controls, on the assumption
that the stress test significantly increases pulse
    rate (the hypothesis)

  2. Formulate a Null Hypothesis, e.g. no difference in
pulse rate betw the two groups,

    • i.e. H0: test=control

    • Alternative hypothesis H1 : test  control
