New Jersey Performing Arts Center – Paula Scher,

Pentagram Design

With her exterior design for the Lucent Technologies Center

for Arts Education in Newark, New Jersey, Scher took

typographic expression into the third dimension. Words,

which do not necessarily want to be read, cover the façade

making the building stand out from the surrounding brick-

wall architecture. The words wrap around the walls as if they

are staging their own energetic performance. Type becomes

pure attitude.
