amongothers.^40 Thatistosay,thestillnessandthegapsareasimportant
asthepaceandtheconnections,anditisthetensionbetweenthetwo
thatpermitscomplexity.
Themoreliteralandlinearthestory,thegreaterthedependence
onlanguagetoo.In 1930 GermaineKrull,whohadmadephotographic
illustrationsforanumberofnarrativebooks,attemptedtomakeone
withnotextatall.^41 Itwasneverpublished,butthemaquettesheleft
