beginning of Recovery 1. The timer counts up to 1 minute for Recovery 1 and one minute for Recovery 2
and stops. If the heart rate is greater than 110 after Recovery 2, the timer will count up to 1 minute for
Recovery 3 and then stop.
4.5.1.2 Start Button
The ‘Start’ button is used to start the timer for the exercise stages.
4.5.1.3 Restart Button
The Restart’ button is used to restart the timer at zero if the test needs to be restarted. This
would be used in a nonemergency situation. For example, if the test has started and the SP’s shoe laces
become untied, the test can be interrupted and the timer restarted. This function is only used in the Warm-
up stage and during the first 15 seconds in Stage 1. The test should not be restarted for any reason after
the first 15 seconds in Stage 1. See Section 3.14.
4.5.1.4 Emergency Stop Button
The Emergency Stop is used only to stop the test immediately if the condition of the SP
warrants this action. This will be described in greater detail in subsequent screens.
4.5.1.5 Predetermined Protocols
The box to the right of the ‘Start’ button displays the predetermined protocol with the speed
and grade to be used for the Warm-up, Stages 1 and 2, and for the Recovery Stages. The middle protocol
is the predetermined protocol that will be used. When the Start button is pressed, the middle protocol will
be highlighted in red for the current stage. The next higher and next lower protocols are also displayed in
this box.
