6.5.2 Quality Control Review of CV Fitness exclusions in Physician’s Exam
Two activities in the physician’s exam are related to the cardiovascular fitness component:
reviewing medications recorded at the SP household questionnaire for safety exclusions and
administering CV fitness exclusion questions.
Medication Review
Physicians are responsible for reviewing the medications reported by the SP at the household
interview. Physicians will then determine if the SP should be excluded from the CV fitness exam based
on a list of exclusion medications that are updated quarterly by the consultants from the Cooper Institute.
This review process is expected to take place at the beginning of the session. The following form (Exhibit
6-17) lists the observation points for this part of the activity.

CV Fitness Exclusion Questions
A set of exclusion questions will be asked in the Physician Exam for the CV fitness
component. This is a second level of safety check to prevent including SPs who may have been recently
diagnosed with one of the exclusion medical conditions or have started taking one of the exclusion
medications in the time period since the household interview. If the SP responds affirmatively to any of
the exclusion questions, he or she will be immediately excluded and will not need to answer the
remaining questions. Physicians are expected to read these questions exactly as written. Below is a
checklist (Exhibit 6-18) used by the trainers in the field. The purposes of this list are to monitor the
administration of the CV fitness exclusion questions and to aggregate specific comments for these
questions, especially the necessity and appropriateness for extra prompt use.
