„ Age predicted maximal heart rate (HRmax = 220 - Age)

3.7 Determination of Exercise Protocol

The system will use the predicted maximal oxygen consumption (see Section 3.6) to

determine the predicted exercise protocol to use for the SP. See Appendix H for the table that is used to

determine the predicted exercise protocol for each individual SP. This table has eight exercise protocols.

Some modifications have been made to the predicted exercise protocol to modify the workload assigned

to specific age groups. The rationale for this is to facilitate a better prediction of the workload for these

specific groups.

If the SP is 12 through 18 years of age, the system will subtract the predicted protocol by 2

and for SPs 19 through 25 years of age, the system will subtract the predicted protocol by 1 to get the

assigned protocol for these age groups.

Exercise protocols 1 and 8 will not be used for 1 2 - through 49-year-olds. In addition,

exercise protocol 2 will not be used for SPs 12 through 18. SPs with a predicted exercise protocol of 1

will be reassigned to protocol 2, while SPs with a predicted exercise protocol of 8 will be reassigned to

protocol 7. For SPs who are 12 through 18 years and assigned a protocol of 1 or 2, the exercise protocol

will be reassigned as protocol 3.

This assigned protocol will be displayed on the Treadmill Test screen. The assigned protocol

may be adjusted up or down one level based on the SP’s response (see Section 3.12) with the following

exceptions. SPs 12 through 49 years cannot be increased to protocol 8 or decreased to protocol 1. In

addition, SPs 12 through 1 8 years cannot be decreased to protocol 1 or 2.

3.8 Preparation for Treadmill Test

Prior to beginning the treadmill test, a blood pressure cuff for automatic blood pressure

monitoring and chest electrodes for monitoring heart rate will be attached to the SP. The SP’s footwear

should be checked once again before starting the test to confirm that laces are tied or shoes are on

properly.
