„ If the SP is having trouble learning to walk on a treadmill, the explanation can be
given after the SP is stable and comfortable. The priority is to get the SP walking on
the treadmill with stability as soon as possible.

„ At 00:15 minutes into Warm-up, the system will give an auditory message:

“Explain RPE”

The technologist will give the following explanation of RPE to the SP. This is a
standard script and should be read exactly as it is written so that each SP is given the
same explanation:

„ See Section 3.10.1 for an exception to this in the final stages of Stage 2.

3.9.7.1 Explanation of Rating of Perceived Exertion (RPE) - Standard Script: English Version


“Please look at the chart on the wall in front of you. Every couple of minutes during the test,

I will ask you to rate how hard you feel you are working overall. Please respond with a number from the


scale. For example, if you feel that you are working at a very low level of effort, you might reply with a 6


or 7 (very, very light). On the other hand, if you feel you are working at a very high level of effort and


cannot continue, you might reply with a 20 (maximal exertion). There is no right or wrong answer, simply


rate your perceived level of exertion at the time I ask the question.”


3.9.7.2 Explanation of Rating of Perceived Exertion (RPE) - Standard Script: Spanish Version


“Por favor mire el gráfico en el muro frente a usted. Cada dos minutos durante la prueba, le

pediré que califique qué tan fuerte siente que está trabajando en general. Por favor conteste con un


número de la escala. Por ejemplo, si usted siente que está trabajando a un nivel de esfuerzo muy bajo,


usted puede responder un 6 ó 7 (muy, muy liviano). Por otra parte, si usted siente que está trabajando a un


nivel de esfuerzo muy alto y no puede continuar, usted puede contestar con un 20 (máximo esfuerzo). No
