„ The system will then give an auditory message:

“Press GO TO RECOVERY on ISIS screen and change treadmill controller to
“Recovery Stage for current protocol.”

3.10. 1 Exception for RPE Greater Than 17 at End of Stage 2

„ If the RPE is greater than 17 in Warm-up, or Stage 1, go to Recovery. There is no
exception at these two stages but you should confirm that the SP understands the
concept. Confirm that the SP understands what he or she is rating and if he or she still
gives a rating of greater than 17, go to Recovery.

„ When you get the RPE assessment at 2:30 minutes into Stage 2, there is 15 to 20
seconds left before ISIS captures the heart rate and blood pressure.

„ If the SP answers with a number greater than 17 AND the SP’s heart rate is within the
acceptable limits for the end of stage 2:

  • Determine if he or she is able to continue for another 15 to 20 seconds.

  • Check for signs of distress by looking at the SP’s face, color, gait, respiratory
    rate.

  • Ask if he or she is able to continue for another 1 5 to 20 seconds.

  • Tell the SP the test is almost finished.

  • An example of a script is: “Do you think you can continue for another 15 to 20
seconds? The test will be over then and the treadmill will be slowing down in
speed and the incline will become level. Are you sure you can continue?”

  • If the SP says he or she can continue for another 15-20 seconds, monitor
continuously and allow the test to continue until the Stage 2 HR and BP are
    captured.

„ Once the HR and BP are captured, if you think the SP can continue for another 10
seconds, allow the test to finish normally.

„ If you think the SP cannot continue for another 10 seconds then:

  • Press ‘Next Stage’ on the treadmill controller to move the treadmill to the
    Recovery Stage.

  • Do not Press ‘Go to Recovery’ in ISIS.

  • (NOTE: You may not have to do this because the length of time is so short and
the treadmill may have already advanced by the time you are ready to do this.)

  • Continue Recovery and Cool Down as usual.
