„ The system will give an auditory message:

“When this stage changes, change stage on treadmill controller to next lower
protocol.”

„ Do not change the stage on the treadmill controller until the current stage is completed
and the treadmill has advanced to the next stage.

„ As soon as the treadmill changes to Stage 1, press NEXT STAGE on the treadmill
controller to get to Stage 1 for the next lower protocol. Watch the markings on the
controller carefully and do not go past the desired setting.

„ The system will automatically highlight the new stage and protocol on the ISIS
screen.

„ Confirm the speed and grade settings on the treadmill controller with the settings on
the ISIS screen.

3.12. 4 Monitoring the Heart Rate During Stage 1

As discussed in Section 3.12, the only stage where a decision to change the exercise protocol

should be made is during Warm-up. If an increase or decrease in the protocol is necessary, the change is

made in the computer system during Warm-up and the treadmill controller is increased or decreased

immediately after the treadmill controller advances to the next stage (first few seconds of Stage 1).

A decision to increase or decrease the exercise protocol should not be made during Stage 1.

If the Change Protocol button is selected, the system will display this message: “The protocol cannot be

changed after Warm-up.”

Throughout Stage 1, monitor the %HRmax scale on the ISIS screen. The SP’s HR should be

within the 60 percent to 80 percent range. The %HRmax scale displays the HR in beats per minute for 60

percent, 80 percent, and 100 percent of PMHR for the SP. The SP’s current HR will be displayed on the

BP monitor. If this reading is above or below the 60 percent to 80 percent range, follow these procedures.

„ If %HRmax is < 60% continue with the current protocol.

„ If %HRmax is above 80 percent of PMHR at any time in Stage 1, determine if the SP
is OK by observing his or her color, breathing and gait for signs of severe fatigue, and
ask the SP how he or she is feeling with a question such as: “How are you doing? We
have approximately 4 minutes left in this part of the test. Do you think you can
continue?”
