videstheintegrativemodel bywhichtorelatetoseparatedisciplinesof
theologyandpsychology.Whileavoidingsimplisticreductionism,where
termsfromonefieldarcunderstoodasmeretranslationsoftermsfromthe
otherfield(suchasforgiveness- healing),thepastoralcounseloristobe
competentlybilingual,


asonewhospeaksnotonlythelangu;lgeofdepthpsychologybutalso
thelanguageoffaith....Thepastoralcounselorusestwodistinctivelydif-
ferentfnllnesofreferenceforinterpretingthecounselee'smaterialwithout
confusingthemwitheachother.Atthesametimethepastoralcounselor
recognizestheinseparabilityoftheologicalandpsychologicalmaterialsin
thelifeeventsofthecounseleeandinpsychologicalconstmc[s,suchas
theGodrepresentation.^12

Inotherwords,thedisciplinesoftheologyandpsychologymustbekept
distinctandunconfusedinthemindofthepastoralcounselorwhilehe
treatsa complexbutunifiedhumanbeing.
Thisisparticularlyimportantbecause,atthemostbasiclevel,thetwo
disciplinesprivilegedifferentepistemologies.Asa scientificdiscipline,psy-
chologyisbasedonempiricaldata.Theology,ontheotherhand,ismost
commonlygroundedinaUlhoritativetextualtradition. Inevitablymetwo
epistemologieswillconflict,appearingonthesurfacetobemutuallyexclu-
sive.Insuchcasesitisincumbentuponthepastoralcounselortoholdthe
perspectivesofthetwodisciplinesintensionasdualinterpretivestrategies
ratherthantoseeka superficialresolutionandtoconsiderita viableinte-
gration.Thehumanbeingistoocomplexandtheindividualdisciplinesare
eachtoolimitedforhastygeneralization.Atthesametime,itisobviousthat
the[wodisciplinesareunifiedinandasmuchastheycenterontheexpo-
sitionandinterpretationofanindividual'sbeing.Inthisway,thedisciplines
remainwhollyseparatewithindividualintegriryyet,atthesametime,are
mutuallyinfluential.Interdisciplinaryintegration,then,isratherpragmatic.It
ismanifestthroughoutthepastoralcounselingprocessasbothdisciplines
aresettothetask, andtheiruniqueperspectivesareadjudicatedbythe
counselorandpatientalikeastotheirsuitabilityforcogentexplication.
