typicallyoccurwhen acolonial powerestablishes an urbansite inan
agrarianseHing.Eachauthorprovidesa reconstructionofaspectsoflifein
ancientGalileeandconsidershowthissettingmayhavedirectlyaffected
Jesusorhisearlyfollowers.Ihaveusedselectedre::ldingsfromthefollow-
ingpublicationsinundergraduatecoursesonthehistoricalJesusinorder
toillustratethekeysocioeconomicconditionsduringthctimeofJesus.
Whilethesescholarsdisagrecabolltthedegreetowhichthetrdditionallife
ofthevillageinhabitantswaschangedbythenewurbancenters,theyall
agreethatarchaeologyprovidesam:ljorkeyin:lI1Yplausiblereconstruc-
tionofEarlyHomanGalilee.
