CharlesCarterpublishedtheresultsofhisinnovative,social-scientific
workontherecentarchaeologicalsurveysofIsraelandtheirimportancein
understandingthetwomainphasesofthePersianperiod,earlypostexilic
andmid-fifthcenturyandlater,andforestimatingIhesizeoftheJewish
population ofYehud.i7Amongthe mostsurprisingconclusionsarethe
sparsenumbersofrelurneesintheeraofZerubbabelandafter,andeven
inIhetimeofSecondZachariahCZech9--14).18Itisstrikinghowanaware-
nessofthesenewdataenablesonetoviewthebiblicalsources,andeven
theextrabiblicalwriltenevidencementioned,inanentirelynewhgluwhen
placedagainstthedemographicpicturereconstructcdfromarchaeology.
Thestruggletomaintainone'sethnicidentity,leIalonereligion,intheface
ofanunder-populationofJewsinthisperiodallowstiSbettertounder-
standthereformsofEzraandNehemiah.
