Thewidespreadnegligenceofnon-jewsandnon-Christiansinourper-
ceptionofancientPalestinecertainlyresultsfromthefactthatwealsoare
heirsandpanofthatbiblicaltrJdition.Ourperceptionofnonbiblicalreli-
gions.andthewaytofindanappropriateterminologyiscommonlyshaped
bybiblical languageandthinking,thusfromtextswriuenbyJewishor
ChristianauthorswhodidnotaCtuallyhaveagenuineinterestindepicting
thepagan"other"inneutraltermsorforsimplydocumentarypurposes.
