ducingmanynewsettlersandrelocatinglargegroupsofpeoplewithinthe
region. New cities wcre founded (Neapolis) and old ones altered
(Jerusalem);manyjewslosttheirlivesorhadtosettleinplacesthatprevi~
ouslywerenotsodenselyoccupied(Darom,Galilee),thusformingnew
centersofpopulationandreligion. WhilethesetwoeVCnlScausedcata-
strophicdisruptionsandanonlygradualreconstructionofjewishlifein
Palestine, theyusuallylcdtoanincreasein paganpresence. Fromthe
pointofthenon-jewishpopulation,however,theRomanizationofPales-
tineinthewakeofthetwowarsmeantanaccelerationofanotherwise
continuousprocessofintegr:lIingan imporwntregionintothereligious
andpoliticalsystemofthepluralisticEastcrnEmpire.

toreadbackfromlaterevidenceandreconstructtheculturalprofileofear-
