panicipaledina dighavenotonlyreadandthoughtandtalkedaboutbib-
licalstudiesandarchaeology,buttheyhavelivedit,workedit,sweatedit,

Neitherarestudentswhoparticipateinanexcavationlikelytomake
theoppositemistakeofoverlookingtheBiblealtogether,fortherewillbe
countlessopportunitiesoverthecourseoftheseasonforsustainedand
thoughtfulconsiderationoftherelationshipbetweentheBibleandarchae-

toMasada,andanotherstudent'scuriosityabouttheconnectionsbetween
Matthew,Sepphoris,andrabbinicJudaismconsumedmostofadinnerin
EastJerusalem.Thesecommentsbringustoanimportantobservationabout
thepedagogicalvalueoffieldexcavalion.EarlierI remarkedthatarchaeol~
ogyisnotanindoorsport.Indeed,consideringthevarietyofchallenges
thatitentails,panicipatinginanexcavationmightrightlybedescribedas
the"X"Gamesofundergraduateeducation.Asonestudenlwroteofher
