orfourweekendsoftouringimportantarchaeologicalsites-studentsby
thispointareuniquelysituatedtomakecoherentuseofbotharchaeol-

on-campusseminarsstruggle(Qattaintothelevelofengagement and
comprehensionthatfrequentlydevelopsduringtheseclosingsessionsof
thefieldschool.Thosemomentsare,inmyjudgment,thepedagogical
goalofthefieldschool.
Twootherbriefsuggestionsm~IYalsobehelpfulatthispoint.When
takingstudentsintothefieldforaseasonofexcavation,startsmall.Itis
nornecessary-infact,itisnotevenadvisable-togathera largegroupof
