Clearly,despitethepaucityofbiblicaltextsthatmentionwomen,itis
possibletorectifytheimbalanceofinformationintheBibleaboutwomen
and menandtheconcomitantdistortionsbyturningtoarchaeologyand
ethnography.Suchdatacancompensateforthestronglikelihoodthatmost
ofthebiblicaltextsarctheproductofelitemalesandthusdonotprovide
a balancedviewofgenderrolesandrelationshipsinthebiblicalworld.
Morocver.itispossibletoovercometheinabilityofstudentstoimaginethe
varietyofrolesthattheyplayed,theircentralplaceinthehouseholdecon-
omy,theirvitalplaceinhouseholdreligiousculture,andtheconsequent
powerthattheyexertedin thedecisionsofdaily lifethataffectedtheir
familiesandtheircommunities.
Preciselybecauseoftherelativeabsenceofordinarypeasantwomen
fromthebiblicalnarrative.recoveringtheirlivesinanimroduaoryBible
classisnma straightforwardmatter.Althougharchaeologycanplayasig-
