Thesevolumes,Syria-PalestineIand11,39werenotmeanttobeauthor-
it~ltive, but they are visually impressive; their real value lies in their
extensiveuseofhigh-qualityphotographicreproduction,includingexten-
siveuseofcolor(whichisstillunusualduetoitshighcost).Thesebooks
providedsomeofthebestavailableviewsofartifacts,buildings,andsites,
andtheuseofcolorphotographsmadethearchaeologytrulycomealive.
Whilethetextislongoutofdateandonlyservedtoidentifyandcontex[U~
alizethephotographs,itisstilla pleasuretoleisurelyperusetheirpages
simplytogetabetterglimpseofsomeofthemostspectacularartifacts
fromtheregion.
Itisontheseverysolidfoundationsthatalllaterhandbooksarebuilt.
Whilethisfirstgenerationofhandbooksisbyandlargeoutofdate,they
maintainsomerelevancyintermsofhowthedisciplineanditspedagogy
hasuevdupeJ.
