withlessinthewayofgraphicsorbibliography,buttheoverallscopeis
muchgrander.The inclusionofa widerangeofthematicentries(e.g.,
"buildingmaterialsandtechniques")makesthesevolumesinvaluable.
CANEisorganizedinamuchdifferentfashion.Itiscomprisedoffour
volumesdividedintoeleventhematicsections.Themesarewideranging
andincludesuchlOpicsaslheenvironment,historyandculture,lechnol-
ogyandartisticproduction,andlanguage,writing,andliterature,toname
buta few.Withineachsectionarenumerousessaysthatcovermostareas
oftheNearEastfromEgypttoIranandfrom prehistotythroughthePer-
sianperiod.Theessaysarewrittenbyexpertsandprovideanexcellent
introductiontoparticulartopics.Essaystendtobelongerandmorewide
rangingthanintheOEANEandincludea bibliography.Thereislessinthe
wayofillustrativematerials,butthisdoesnO(diminishtheoverallhigh
qualityoftheessaysandthustheutilityofCANE.
