There are some images that benefi t from a sense
of movement and blur, but this shot of a white-tailed
eagle having a drink is the reverse. Ensuring that
everything is absolutely pin sharp is undoubtedly
the right approach. The symmetry really makes the
picture stand out, while placing the bird centrally in
the frame was an excellent choice. Capturing the
bird demonstrating behaviour – rather than in a
classic static pose – adds interest to what might
have been a rather ordinary animal portrait.

Several of us on AP are dog owners, and more
than one of us is a sucker for a sighthound.
This lovely straight portrait is full of cheek and
mischief, and the lighting brings out the glint in
the lurcher’s eyes. The detail on his beard is pin
sharp, and the tips of his ears complete the
character. This is a dog we’d be happy to meet
out on a walk.
