If you’d like to spend less time
in Photoshop you need to get
everything right in the camera,
and that includes your white
balance. This week we offer
a refresher on how to achieve perfect colour
every time. Elsewhere in the issue there’s
a bit of an animal theme, starting with the
stunning winners of our Animal Magic round
of APOY 2019, and continuing with our expert
tips for photographing badgers. Also, I’m
slightly suspicious of anyone who doesn’t like
dogs. What’s not to love about man’s best
friend? I defy anyone to remain unmoved by
the winners of this year’s Dog Photographer of
the Year, for which I was delighted to be one of
the judges. Finally, Panasonic’s stunning new
full-frame mirrorless S1, tested this week, may
not be an animal but it’s certainly a beast.

THIS cute baby picture was
uploaded to our Facebook
page using the hashtag
#appicoftheweek. It was taken
by photographer Nick Phipps.
He tells us, ‘Newborn and baby
photography is my passion. This
portrait of baby Zoe was taken
in the studio with a single strobe
and octabox as part of a
project to document her first
year. I wanted to keep the tones
neutral, drawing attention to her
eyes and emphasising her
inquisitive facial expressions. They
say the eyes are the window to
the soul and I think that is
definitely true on this occasion.’
