The shortlist for Royal Observatory
Greenwich’s Insight Investment Astronomy
Photographer of the Year 2019
competition has been announced, with
£10,000 to be presented to the overall
winner. Now in its 11th year, the
competition attracted more than 4,
entries from amateur and professional
photographers across 90 countries, and
the shortlisted entries show everything
from night shots of the Milky Way to
Saturn and its icy rings. The image shown

Bloom of youth
Fujifilm has launched the My Life exhibition, a showcase of what
life is like for youth in Britain today. The public are invited to
submit their photos, and for every photo chosen to feature in the
exhibition, Fujifilm will donate £2.50 to The Mix, a charity that
supports young people across the UK. You have until the end of
August to submit images via http://www.fujifilm-printlife.eu/london.
Instagram ramps up anti-bullying tools
Instagram has announced two new anti-bullying features. If its AI
spots that users are about to post potentially rude comments, it
will ask if they want to proceed. The other feature, still under
development, will let you ‘Restrict’ someone, whereby comments
on your posts from that person will be visible only to them.
Ariel doesn’t wash
with Zeiss followers
Staying with social media, Zeiss
has apologised after a
promotional shoot featuring its
Otus 100mm f/1.4 lens upset
some of its followers on Twitter
for allegedly being tokenistic.
The shoot features model Katka
Kavanova dressed as Ariel from
The Little Mermaid, and in
some of the images, the lens is
not even on a camera.
Pentax fi sheye zoom updated
Ricoh has launched the HD Pentax-DA Fish-Eye 10-17mmF3.5-4.
ED lens. Featuring an updated cosmetic design, it employs the
latest HD coating, along with an SP coating on the front elements
to repel stains. The hood is now removable for use on full-frame
DSLRs. The new model goes on sale in August for £499.99.
Hoya Fusion fi lters
The Hoya Fusion One series of
filters is now on sale, available
in Protector, UV and Circular-
Polarising variants. Hoya says
they are a ‘fusion’ of some of
its key filter specifications,
such as the Hoya Multilayer
Coating (HMC), high light-
transmission, pro-grade optical
glass and low-profile frames.
They are also stain resistant,
with a water-repellent coating.
