Staying Healthy in the Fast Lane

expect good health!

white bread, fatty meats, and pastries. It may even take less time to
walk across the parking lot instead of driving around for five or ten
minutes finding the closest parking space. Yes, you have the time!
Don’t tell me—or, more importantly, you—that you don’t have
time! You’ll find the time to go to the doctor’s visit, go to the hospi-
tal, or get some lab tests done if you have to. If you are thinking and
aware, you can add a phenomenal amount of health-promoting ac-
tivities into your normal, daily routine. I know you can!

So Where Is the “Fun Part?”

The key to staying healthy and being healthy is doing things
as part of your lifestyle that are fun and that help maintain your
health. My brother has ridden his bicycle to work for more than
thirty years. Over the years, that ride has taken anywhere from
probably five minutes to an hour or so each way. So he rides to
work as a necessity, but he also likes to ride his bicycle. In addition,
my brother likes to coach soccer (via four girls over the years) and
he referees soccer as well. While he enjoys refereeing soccer, he is
also running up and down a field for a couple of hours each game
getting solid exercise. My brother also teaches wilderness photog-
raphy, so for “work” he takes people on beautiful scenic hikes to
Yosemite. These are all perfect examples of making your health a
fun part-time job!
Of course, you can also incorporate your healthy activities into
your leisure time. For example, I am a swing and salsa dancer.
These have become major forms of movement and aerobic exer-
cise for me, with a little running, stair-stepper, and elliptical rider
thrown on top. Dancing really makes your health a fun part-time
job! I am around friends, I am listening to great music, it is con-
venient for me because it fits into my busy lifestyle, and I love to
partner dance. But here is a little “pearl of wisdom”: A lot of people
think I am a bit crazy and have too much energy, because when I
come to dance I dance straight for an hour or two. I don’t stop for
too long. There is a reason: Dance can be very aerobic or mildly
aerobic, depending on how you do it and the type of dance you do.
