TwoyearsafterPuertoRicodeclaredbankruptcy,andwiththedevastationunleashedbyHurricaneMaria
stillhobblingitseconomicrecovery,publicfrustrationhasreacheda boilingpoint.Peoplebeganpouringinto
thestreetsofOldSanJuanonJuly13,afterinvestigativejournalistspublishedmessagessentbyPuertoRico
GovernorRicardoRossellóandhisinnercircledisparagingpoliticalfoesandordinarycitizensalike.Sincethen
theprotestshavegrownin sizeandintensity,leadingtoa massdemonstrationonJuly22,in whichanestimated
100,000peoplefloodeda highwaynearSanJuan’sfinancialcenter.OnJuly24,PuertoRico’sspeakerofthe
Housegavethebesiegedgovernorhourstoresign,sayinghewouldotherwisebeginimpeachmentproceedings.
Earlierthesameday,a judgeimposeda four-monthhaltonseveraldozenpiecesoflitigationthatarepartof
bankruptcyproceedings.Thepoliticalchaosmayhavesubsidedbythen,butpublicangermaycontinuetomount.
