Built in 1958, this monument
by the river Tagus just west of
___’s city centre marks the
voyages of discovery launched
by Prince Henry the Navigator,
the lead statue here. Among
the figures on the other side
is ___, who led the first
expedition to circumnavigate
the Earth. He died in 1521 before
reaching home and, among
other honours, he has a species
of penguin named after him.
Near the monument is a
monastery that’s thought to be
the birthplace of pastéis de nata,
the mini ___ whose global
popularity grows by the year.
Though ___ is rarely
counted among the world’s
culinary superpowers, its
trading legacy helped to bring
the chilli pepper to Asia. The
resulting crossover of tastes
is best symbolised by vindaloo,
the speciality of ___, the
country’s main colony in India.
We’ve delved
into our archives and
pulled out this photo, from
a story that first appeared in
the July 2010 issue. You’ll find
a few gaps in the description:
read to the end and then
see how many of the
blanks you can
fill in.
