Teaching Critical Thinking in Psychology: A Handbook of Best Practices

(ff) #1

Acknowledgments

We three have worked on a variety of writing and editing projects together. We enjoy one

another’s company, whether in person, by phone, or—as is true most of the time—via

e-mail. We believe that we balance one another quite well, particularly where good humor

and meeting deadlines are concerned. We do know that we could not have finished this

work without the good efforts of our authors. We also know that we would not have

undertaken this project without the enthusiastic support and sage advice of our Blackwell

editor and friend, Chris Cardone. As one of us likes to say: Chris is rare and true. We are

also grateful for the good work of Chris’s team, Sarah Coleman and Kelly Basner. Without

their good work, the project would never have moved forward so quickly or in such an

organized fashion. We are grateful to Jenny Roberts and Hannah Rolls for preparing the

manuscript for publication.

We also owe a debt of gratitude to Bill Hill and his colleagues at Kennesaw State

University’s Department of Psychology and the Center for Excellence in Teaching and

Learning (CETL). Kennesaw has created a convivial atmosphere where colleagues who are

interested in cutting-edge pedagogy in psychology are welcome to contribute and to learn.

We also want to thank our colleagues who lead the Society for the Teaching of Psychology

who, with the Kennesaw crowd, have conducted the successful “Best Practices” confer-

ences that led to this and previous books. We also want to thank our friends at NIToP,

especially Doug Bernstein, for their ongoing support toward improving teaching and

learning in psychology.

Dana would like to thank his family—Sarah, Jake, and Hannah—for encouraging him

to edit and write. As always, Moravian College provided Dana with the necessary resources

to plan and complete this editorial effort. Jane credits her ability to get scholarly work

accomplished both to her husband Brian’s patience and tolerance and the good-natured

support she receives from the University of West Florida to remain active as a scholar

despite her role as a dean. Randy thanks the love of his life, Corliss, for 37+ years of support,
