Consultation on redundancies
An employer who intends to make 20 or more employees at one establishment redundant
must consult with trade unions with a view to reaching agreement with them. If it is pro-
posed to make at least 100 employees redundant at one establishment, the Secretary of State
must be notified in writing.
Essential points
n Contracts of employment can be created orally or in writing and contain both express
and implied terms.
n As a matter of law, implied terms of the contract of employment place obligations on
both the employer and the employee.
n All female employees have a statutory right to 39 weeks’ ordinary maternity leave.
n Those who qualify can take either one or two consecutive weeks’ paternity leave.
n When a couple adopt a child, one member of the couple is entitled to time off work
with statutory adoption pay.
n An employee with at least one year’s continuous employment can take up to 13 weeks’
parental leave, in respect of each child, to look after his or her child or to make
arrangements for the child’s welfare.
