Umbrellas

Umbrellasareusedinthestudioinawayverysimilarto
the softbox. The light is placed facing away from the
subject and is bounced toward the subject from the
umbrella.Theresultinglightwillbesoftandflatteringand
will wrap around the subject with ease.


The spread of the light can be altered when using this
modifier bymovingtheumbrella closerorfurtheraway
from the light source. The closer the light is to the
umbrella, thenarrower the fall of light; and the further
awayfromtheumbrella,thelargerthefallandthesofter
the light.


Thereareavarietyofdifferentumbrellasthatcanbeused.
Varyingincolourandinsize,theonemostcommonlyused
isthewhiteumbrella,asitwillcomplementskintones.The
silverumbrellawillbouncethelightveryefficiently,andas
suchcanbeusedasa veryeffectivefilllight.Themost
diffused umbrellalight iscreatedwhenthephotographer
shoots using the translucent umbrella, as the light is
dispersedinawaysimilartoaregularsoftbox.However
youwillfindthatthespreadoflightfromtheumbrellais
notquiteascontrollableasthelightfromasoftbox,andas
a resulttheyaremorecommonly usedin theportraiture
setting for the purposes of a fill light, where a less
directional light source is needed.

lighting and can produce some interesting effects and
