Silhouettes
Silhouettes can make wonderful graphic portraits when
theyarehandledcorrectly.Itisbest foryoutovisualize
beforehandwhatyouwouldliketoachieve.Thekeytothis
techniqueisshapeandangle,asthesewilladdinterestand
a graphic nature to the image.
Thesubjectneedstobelitfrombehind,withsharpdefined
edges to their features, for this to be correct. No light
should spill from the background
tothesubject.Themosteffectivewaytolightasilhouette
wouldbethroughapop-uplitbackdropsuchasaLastolite,
or by bouncing thelight onto a large background, and
placing the subject a few feet in front of this.
Askingthesubjecttobend,pose,turntoaprofileortwo
littleoneskissingorjumpingwillcreateinterestingshapes
andmovementtothebackground.Colour,intheformof
gelsorbackgrounds,canalsoaddtothegraphicqualityof
this particular kind of image.
