Black and White Conversions

Blackandwhiteimageswillalwayshavesuchabeautiful
timelessqualitytothem,andovertheyearsmanyportrait
photographershave leant towards this classical study of
tones and textures to create some very striking images.


Withtheadvance ofthedigitalagethephotographer no
longerhastochoosebeforetheytaketheshotastowhether
theimageshouldbeinB&Worcolour,asinthedaysof
film, giving us greater freedom to be creative with the
image. However, with the vast number of techniques
available,andsoftwareoptionstoconverttheimagestaken
into monochrome, many B&W conversions areof poor
quality and lack a tonal range that would have been
produced from awell-exposedblack and white negative.


WhenyouareproducingfromaRAWfilethebetterB&W
conversions are those that offer the photographer a
non-destructive solution (not affecting the original file).
Two of these methods are
explained below. Both techniques will involve the
photographercreatinganadjustmentlayer,soalltheusable
information available can be used. RAW files that are
producedby your digitalcamera contain red, greenand
blueinformation.Thesearecalledchannelsandcontainall
of the information needed to create your image.
