LayersinPhotoshopcanbewonderfullyusefultoolswhen
manipulatingimages.Therearethreekindsoflayers,each
withadifferingpurpose.Tovisualizehowtheywork,you
canimagineanumberofimaginaryimagesplacedontop
of one another. Each layer can be manipulated and
controlledinsuchawaythatwhenthelayersareflattened
together the resulting final image is a composite of many.
ADuplicateLayerofanimagewilljustbeastraightcopy
oftheoriginal,placedoverthetop.Thiscanbeworkedin
certainareas,andthenmergedorflattenedintotheoriginal,
withoutaffectingthe information in the original piece.
ALayerMaskisanotherlayerplacedontopoftheoriginal
image.Thislayeragaincanbemanipulatedinsuchaway
astoaddandsubtractelementsfromthetopimagewiththe
use of the paintbrush tool, using either black, white or grey.
Adjustment Layers are those where a duplicate of the
original ismade,and anychangesrequiredaremade on
thislayer.Theopacityofthelayercanalsobechangedto
blend these in with the original in a more natural and
selective way.
